For a sense of scale, that translates to anywhere between five and eleven years. Altman's prediction signals the advent of what he calls "the Intelligence Age," a transformation that could redefine the boundaries of human potential and technological capability.


"It is possible that we will have superintelligence in a few thousand days (!); it may take longer, but I’m confident we’ll get there," Altman wrote in a blog post titled "The Intelligence Age." His optimism about the future of AI is based on the rapid advancements in deep learning—a technology that has already delivered ChatGPT and other transformative tools. But as Altman acknowledges, the path to superintelligence is fraught with "extremely high-stakes challenges."


The Promise of Superintelligence

Superintelligence refers to an AI system that far exceeds human capabilities in virtually all fields of interest, from solving complex scientific problems to creative endeavors like composing music or writing poetry. As Altman envisions it, this technology could elevate human civilization to new heights.


Imagine a world where AI acts as a personal assistant, tutor, and expert on any topic, available to everyone at all times. Such a system could accelerate scientific discoveries, unlock the secrets of the universe, and even help us establish colonies in space. It could also democratize access to knowledge and expertise, allowing individuals to learn new languages or skills with unprecedented ease.


Altman paints a picture of a future where each person has a “personal AI team” of virtual experts to handle tasks, freeing humans from routine work and allowing them to focus on creative and strategic endeavors. “In the next couple of decades, we will be able to do things that would have seemed like magic to our grandparents,” he wrote. This optimistic view sees superintelligence as a catalyst for unparalleled prosperity and progress, much like the internet has been for the information age—only magnified exponentially.


The Dangers of Unleashing Superintelligence

However, Altman is not blind to the potential downsides. “It will not be an entirely positive story, but the upside is so tremendous that we owe it to ourselves, and the future, to figure out how to navigate the risks in front of us,” he wrote. The arrival of superintelligence could disrupt the global economy, lead to mass unemployment, and even pose existential risks if not carefully managed.


The integration of AI into society has already sparked debates over job displacement, privacy, and ethical concerns. As machines become capable of performing tasks traditionally reserved for humans, from bookkeeping to even complex medical diagnostics, entire professions could be rendered obsolete. Altman acknowledges this issue but argues that the historical trend shows new technologies create new job niches. “Nobody is looking back at the past, wishing they were a lamplighter,” he quips.
