On February 17, 2023 five former Memphis Police Officers, members of the Scorpion Special Unit, pled not guilty to the charges of murder, assault and kidnapping in the death of Tyre Nichols. This was the first time Nichols' mother came face to face with the officers accused of murdering her son.

The Nichols family and their attorney, Ben Crump, arrived early for a court appearance that lasted only a few minutes. All five men have been granted bail, and only appeared briefly while their attorneys entered their pleas.

Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr., and Justin Smith were terminated by the Memphis Police Department on January 21st after a video of them brutally beating Nichols surfaced.

May 1, 2023 is the next time the officers will appear in court.
