YUMA, ARIZONA – In a story that has touched hearts around the world, 8-year-old Zayin Berry from Yuma, Arizona, demonstrated an extraordinary act of compassion and bravery when he rescued a kitten from abuse. While visiting a local park with his mother, Rhiannon Berry, Zayin witnessed a group of children mistreating a small kitten by tossing it around like a football.

Zayin was immediately disturbed by the sight. He later described his feelings, saying, “I felt sad and mad.” Instead of reacting with anger or aggression, Zayin made a selfless and thoughtful decision—he offered his prized skateboard to the children in exchange for the kitten. The children agreed to the trade, and Zayin ran with the kitten to his mother for help.

A Rescue with Heart

The kitten, whom the family later named Peaches, was in poor condition when Zayin brought him home. The tiny animal’s breathing was congested, and his paws were dirty and caked with debris. Concerned for his health, Zayin and his mother took Peaches to the Humane Society of Yuma for urgent medical care.

At the shelter, veterinarians diagnosed Peaches with a severe upper respiratory infection. Tragically, the infection had advanced so far that one of his eyes was beyond saving and had to be surgically removed. Despite the kitten’s ordeal, Zayin’s love and care for Peaches never wavered. When his mother explained that Peaches would lose an eye, Zayin responded, “That’s fine as long as he can live, because that’s my best friend.”

Recognition and Support

Zayin’s act of selflessness did not go unnoticed. Staff at the Humane Society were deeply moved by his actions. Lauren Twerdak, a Humane Society worker, praised Zayin, saying, “For someone so young to show this level of empathy and courage is truly remarkable.”

The Humane Society, along with the popular skateboard retailer Zumiez, decided to reward Zayin’s kindness. They presented him with a gift card to replace the skateboard he gave up to save Peaches. Community members who heard the story were equally touched, contributing donations to help the Berry family cover Peaches’ medical expenses and finalize his adoption.

A New Chapter for Peaches

Now recovering in his forever home, Peaches is thriving under Zayin’s care. The bond between the boy and his kitten has only grown stronger. Peaches, though missing one eye, has a second chance at life, all thanks to Zayin’s quick thinking and compassionate heart.

Rhiannon, Zayin’s mother, couldn’t be prouder of her son. “Zayin has always had a soft spot for animals, but what he did for Peaches was incredible. It’s a reminder that even the smallest actions can make a big difference.”
